About Us Founded in 1967 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Galveston County, Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on donations and adoption fees to house, feed and provide medical care to the companion animals in our adoption program. Our organization is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors. The primary care-givers of the animals in our adoption program and daily administrators of our organization are staff members. All other duties and functions that are necessary to sustain our organization are performed by volunteers. Please forward any questions, comments or concerns to us via email. The mission of Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA is to shelter companion animals that we have rescued from animal control facilities and individuals until permanent homes are found for them. Our adoption program strives to place the animal with a family whose lifestyle and activity level matches that of the animal. While in our adoption program they receive medical care and socialization skills that are essential for successful adoptions. All of the animals in our program are fully vaccinated, altered, micro-chipped, and de-wormed. Our felines are tested for FIV/ FeLv and our dogs are tested and/or treated for heartworm disease prior to adoption. Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA provides educational and community outreach programs that focus on ways to reduce the number of unwanted companion animals and their euthanization. These programs educate about the daily care and responsibilities of a family pet, including the importance of spaying/neutering, proper vaccinations, and the prevention of heartworms and other parasites. Our programs also provide information on resources available to the community for low-cost spay/neuter assistance and all other medical care. We believe our collaboration with other animal rescue groups, agencies, and private and public members of the community are important to the continued success of our programs. Surrendering Your Pet Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA will take in any adoptable surrendered animal providing space is available. When the shelter is at full capacity, the animal is placed on the waiting list and the owner will be contacted and given an appointment for a pet health examination and adoptability assessment. Once the animal has been wait listed, the owner is requested to keep all shots and vaccinations current and have the animal spayed/neutered if not already done. This action will assist the shelter in taking the animal as quickly as possible. Wait list animals have first priority for available shelter space. There is a relinquishment fee of $75.00 due at the time of intake. If the animal is found to be Heartworm positive, owners will be asked to donate up to $250 to cover the cost of treatment.
