Hurricane & Disaster Preparedness Information
The two most important things to remember regarding preparations for your pet in a hurricane or other disaster situation are these:
      1. Plan ahead
      2. Never leave your pet at home alone, inside or out

Taking your pet with you is usually the best option for you and your pet. Leave early, don't wait for a mandatory evacuation order. An unnecessary trip is far better than waiting too long to leave safely with your pet. If you wait too long and are evacuated by emergency officials, you may be told to leave your pet behind.

If you choose not to take your pet with you, it is important that you make plans to provide them with a safe, secure place to board. Local facilities will fill up quickly, so you may find it safer and easier to reserve boarding space at a facility near the area you will be evacuating.

If you plan on taking your pet with you, here are some things to do in preparation for an evacuation:
      1. Microchip your pet and make sure your pet has an identification tag that includes your address,
phone number and maybe the phone number of a friend or relative living outside the disaster area
      2. Condition your pet to being in a pet carrier
      3. Locate "pet friendly" hotels via websites like www.petswelcome.com or www.petscanstay.com
      4. Contact your local emergency management office for information on shelters that welcome pets
      5. Have a supply kit packed for your pet

Your Evacuation Supply Kit for your pet should include:
      1. Food, water and treats - enough for at least one week
      2. Medications including heartworm and flea prevention
      3. Medical records with veterinarian name and telephone number
      4. Secure collars, leashes and tags for dogs
      5. Secure harnesses, leashes and tags for cats
      6. Microchip information
      7. Food and water bowls
      8. Cat litter and litter box
      8. Favorite toys to keep them occupied and blankets for comfort
      9. Kennel or carrier for each pet so you can move them safely and securely
     10. Current photograph of your pet
     11. Pet first aid kit

The following items are for a basic Pet First-Aid Kit:
      1. Sterile gauze pads (3" x 3" and 2" X 2") and gauze bandage rolls (1" and 2")
      2. First-aid adhesive tape, 1" roll
      3. Cotton swabs (Q-tips®)
      4. Tweezers
      5. Scissors
      6. Plastic freezer/sandwich bags
      7. Small bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide
      8. Styptic pencil or cornstarch (stems blood flow from minor cuts)
      9. Antibacterial ointment
     10. Antiseptic cleansing wipes
     11. Kaopectate® or Pepto-Bismol®
