Volunteer
Becoming a volunteer is easy and the rewards are endless. Just follow these steps:
1. Review the categories and positions below.

2. Attend our Volunteer Orientation that lasts approximately one hour (attending an orientation is required in order to volunteer). Orientations are held each month on the third Saturday. Exceptions are holidays and holiday weekends. Send us an email to reserve a spot and let us know your category of interest and if you meet any of the age restrictions below.

The next scheduled orientation is Saturday, February 18 at 10:30 a.m. and will be held at Bayside Bed & Biscuit in their Training Building (secured by chain-link fencing) which is directly behind the vet building and to the left of the main Bayside Bed & Biscuit building. Bayside Bed & Biscuit is located at 920 Lawrence Road in Kemah. Please park in the Business Park parking lot which is to the right of the main Bayside Bed & Biscuit building. We want to keep the Bayside Bed & Biscuit parking lot open so that customers can park their vehicles close to the buildings for loading and off-loading of their animals. Thank you!

3. Download the Volunteer Application and bring it with you to Orientation.

4. Have a question or comment about volunteering? Email us.

Please Note the Following
Age Restrictions: We are unable to accept children 12 years and younger into our volunteer program. A parent or legal guardian must accompany children between the ages of 13 and 16 at all times while at Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA. All children under the age of 18 must have a parent sign a liability waiver. Parents of children ages 13-17 must accompany them to orientation. Volunteers at PetSmart must be 21 or have a parent or guardian volunteer with them if they are 18-20 years old.

Communication: In the interest of time, cost and general efficiency, most of our volunteer communication will be done via email.

(FM 646 @ Gulf Frwy) Volunteers at PetSmart must be 21 or have a parent or guardian volunteer with them if they are 18-20 years old.

Dogs and Cats at PetSmart Need You
We need volunteers Saturdays and Sundays for Adoption Days at PetSmart. We have six to ten cats in the Adoption Center at PetSmart every day and we take some of our great dogs there every weekend. We need volunteers 11-4 p.m. on Saturday and 12-4 p.m. on Sunday to work as Adoption Hosts for two hour shifts. (Volunteers at PetSmart must be 21 or have a parent or guardian volunteer with them if they are 18-20 years old.)

Cats at PetSmart Need You
We need early morning volunteers to be there between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. to spruce up their kennels before the store opens at 9 a.m. It’s a quick and easy job that needs to be done everyday, but your commitment to a certain day or days each week is needed. (Volunteers at PetSmart must be 21 or have a parent or guardian volunteer with them if they are 18-20 years old.)

Bathers/Groomers for Dogs Going to PetSmart on Adoption Days
It's important that our canine companions put their best paws forward when they are at PetSmart for adoption opportunities and nothing says that better than a bath! This task is done at our facility in San Leon.

Volunteering at Our Adoption Facility in San Leon
Cat Cuddler
Volunteer in our cattery Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday from 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and help keep our cats and kittens friendly and affectionate. You can cuddle, play with, and assist with grooming and bathing. All of our kittens and cats need attention and affection during their stay to make them more adoptable. Training in the handling and removal of cats from their kennels is required.

Canine Crew
There are three distinct positions on this team. You can participate in one or all. Canine crew members must be able to leash the dogs, remove the dog from the kennel, maintain control over the dog, and return the dog back to its kennel safely. Your participation in the Canine Crew will help to exercise, socialize and keep the dogs behaviorally healthy until they are adopted. Training in the handling and removal of the dogs from their kennel is required. Participants must have the physical ability to handle the dogs, and a commitment to their care is required.

1. Canine Socialization Park Walk: The Canine Socialization Park Walk is open to the public every Saturday except for the first Saturday of each month when it is open for shelter dogs only. The current session is 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (The time of these sessions varies according to season). The canine crew member will be responsible for leashing, removing the dog from the kennel, and walking the dog to the adjacent field. Dogs are let off leash once the gates are locked and are free to run and play with each other. The handler is expected to walk around the field during the one hour session. This is a great way to get your exercise and help our dogs at the same time.

Members of the public are invited to bring their own dogs to the park when trainer Jason Vasconi supervises the sessions. Read details and requirements of public participation here.

2. Canine Coach:Canine coaching is conducted every Friday by trainer Jason Vasconi. The current session is 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Fridays. (The time of these sessions may vary according to the season). Jason will oversee and guide the handler and dog through basic commands. Usually the handler will work with the same dog until the dog is a ‘graduate’.

Our Canine Coaching class is designed to give our adoptable dogs a head start into obedience training. Our students are first taught basic commands and then more advanced commands are introduced. Jason Vasconi and our volunteer canine coaching crew select students based on need and length of stay at Bay Area Pet Adoptions. Dogs who stay longer get a refresher course if needed. This program has been a great success and has increased the adoptability of every dog that has taken the class.

3. Canine Socializer: This is a scheduled position arranged to suit your own availability. A minimum of eight hours a month is required. Team members take the dogs for leash walks, play with them in the play yard, brush and groom, and give them lots of attention and affection. This is performed at the shelter and provides them with the love, companionship and exercise to keep their stress levels to a minimum.

Volunteering for Miscellaneous Tasks
That's right, miscellaneous -- that's everything else. There are so many other things that need to be handled by volunteers. Here are just a FEW examples:

1. Facility Maintenance and Groundskeeping: These are ongoing projects needed to help maintain and keep our grounds in good condition. Donate your time by painting, mowing, weed eating, and doing minor repairs.
2. Woofstock Committee: Help us plan our biggest annual fundraiser! Email our Woofstock Committee Chairperson for more information!
3. More, More, More, Always More and Sometimes at the Last Minute!
